Rewilding

Description

Rewilding was developed during my senior year. In 2021, we joined the NYU Game Center Incubator and expanded the team to 8 people.

Rewilding is a meditative ecology game about growing a forest in the abandoned landscape of post-climate-change America. After each day's work building up your new ecosystem, you enter cryosleep for a month and awake to see the world and yourself slowly change. The game follows a person who gives up their chronological life for this job and explores how it feels to experience decades of incremental work all at once. Over time, you'll learn more about why you came here, your past life, and how life grows after the worst has come to pass.

My Role

Here are some quick details about my role in the project.

  • Worked with the team to build design pillars for better communication and collaboration.

  • Designed new plants within the existing ecology system and designed levels to facilitate exploration.

  • Coordinated with software engineers, musicians, narrative designers, and concept artists to write design documentation.

  • Wrote shaders, and modeled assets in Blender to develop a visual style that could handle a large amount of plants on screen.

  • Hired other 3D artists/animators and developed a production pipeline they could use to replicate the game’s style.

  • Collaborated with concept artists and programmers to design an environment that facilitated exploration and looked appealing before and after the player grew their forest.

Cool Features

Here’s some stuff about the project I am proud of

  • We were featured in Wired!

  • Plants interacted with each other and the soil to develop intricate ecosystems from simple components

  • Trash collecting and plant watering systems created a cozy daily routine.

  • A fully voice-acted narrative unfolded during play kinda like a podcast.

  • The game has a procedurally generated soundtrack that builds as your forest grows more complex

  • The ecosystems we designed are based on the real forests of upstate New York.
